On July 8, 2025, we hosted a riveting Grand Final debate against HKCCCU Logos Academy IV. The motion, "This House Regrets the prominence of filial piety as the guiding principle in Asian households," sparked a brilliant showcase of our team’s skill as the affirmative side, with our compelling team line: Filial piety is an outdated compass leading families astray.
As the first speaker, Adrian Man (3S09) powerfully argued that filial piety can be financially burdensome for young adults and also highlighted its emotional strain. Building on our case, Keira Liu (4S27) asserted that filial piety is outdated in modern Asia, citing evidence that Indian Gen Z prefer love marriages, reflecting shifting values. She championed eudaimonia — happiness and free will — as a superior guide, citing Finland’s success in the 2025 World Happiness Report. Concluding the debate for our team, Abby Wong (4R22) masterfully rebutted the negative team’s claims regarding the benefits of filial piety, emphasizing its financial instability and emotional toll, particularly the higher depression rates among Asian American youth compared to their Western peers. Her attack on the opposition's argument was especially impressive: “Indeed, what use is a rusting pillar?”
PLKWCC clinched a triumphant victory, our sharp arguments and teamwork proving the harms of filial piety. Abby Wong earned the well-deserved Best Speaker award, dazzling with her eloquence and poise. We’re immensely proud of this Grand Final win, a testament to our team’s dedication! Yet, as we celebrate, we’re bittersweet, as many stellar debaters retire this year. Like Taylor Swift’s Long Live, we’ll treasure the memories of their passion forever. Here’s to new paths, guided by a modern compass to happiness!
