On the afternoon of December 3, 2025, our debate team triumphed over HKCCCU Logos Academy IV in the Hong Kong Secondary Schools Debating Competition. As the negative side on the motion This House Believes That Universities Should Stop Awarding Sports Scholarships, our team argued passionately that these scholarships are fair and help everyone succeed. Jayden Po, Willard Charm, and Adrian Man delivered a cohesive case, emphasising hard work, opportunity, and social benefits, ultimately convincing the adjudicator of their value.
Jayden opened with athletes’ sacrifices — up to 5 hours of daily training and 10-15 hours of weekly strength training — and financial barriers such as $38,270 in annual college costs, using Kevin Durant’s poverty-to-pro story to ask, ‘That doesn’t seem fair, does it?’ Willard built on this, showing university fame cycles (Michael Jordan boosting UNC, Caleb Williams revitalising USC) and societal second chances, including 90% NCAA grad rates and paths for SEN students like Nicholas Watson (autism/ADHD to Harding University), questioning fairness without them. Adrian sealed it by addressing fairness and cost-effectiveness, recapping our points in response to affirmative claims, and demonstrating that scholarships foster inclusive success.
What a team effort — keep shining, PLKWCC Debating Club!
