Aims

to provide every learner of a second language with further opportunities for extending their knowledge and experience of the cultures of other people as well as opportunities for personal and intellectual development, further studies, pleasure and work in the English medium; and

to enable every learner to prepare for the changing socio-economic demands resulting from advances in information technology; these demands include the interpretation, use and production of materials for pleasure, study and work in the English medium.

In the junior forms, the student-centred approach is adopted in the English Language curriculum to help learners progress towards the learning objectives as well as develop the generic skills, values and attitudes. The use ofvarious tasks with purposeful contexts aims to promote learning in communication with teachers and other learners. Students are encouraged to be active participants in their own learning, cultivating their confidence and joy in using English. Inter-class competitions are organised to provide students with an opportunity to showcase their learning outcomes and arouse their interest in English.

In the senior forms, the design of the curriculum is aimed at building on the knowledge, skills and positive values and attitudes that learners have developed in the junior forms. Assessment tasks are designed to promote assessment for learning. Students will also be encouraged to develop learning how to learn skills to promote independent and lifelong language learning beyond the classroom.

Assessment

There are multiple forms of formative assessments, feedback and demonstrations of learning.Students receive individual feedbackor team feedback from the teacher and/or their groups based on their performance in class activities, group or individual assignments and projects.

Students’ mastery of core knowledge and skills are regularly assessed through summative assessments including uniform quizzes, formal term tests and examinations.
